Our need will be the real creator.

—Plato

Plato discussed need as the driving force behind innovation in his Socratic dialogue The Republic around 375 BCE. Over the time, some scholars challenged Plato’s belief, identifying curiosity as the true driver for discovery. I think both are true. Curiosity may lead to game-changing innovation, as evidenced by the invention of the automobile, electric light bulb, and transistor. However, we are typically faster and more successful in creating meaningful solutions if we start our exploration by developing a clear understanding of peoples’ current experiences and underlying needs. And that’s where I begin.
